Days of Petanque: Remember when…

Ahhh, for the good old days when the end of the world was just a idea for a movie script.

When the biggest challenge of the day was whether or not there was enough beer to last or if someone needed to make a run to the store.

When the limits of play was how long the battery would last on the string of lights.

When the only reason to leave was to walk the dog
or pick up your kid from a swim meet
or a soccer game, or baseball or lacrosse practice
or get home in time to make dinner
or go out to dinner, or a party, or a movie;
when staying at home was an option, not a survival technique.
When stay-cation was a way to save money, not lives.
When someone arrived at the courts you could hug them
or even give them a kiss on the cheek—or lips for God's sake.
When the game was over you could shake hands.
When you could say "Hope to see you tomorrow,"
did not mean, "This could be the last day of life as we know it."

Well, whatever happens, we've had a good run of it,
and I hope this settles down soon
and we can once again go to the grocery store and expect to find toilet paper
and have a glass of wine with dinner at the Fig
and go to the movies and watch a disaster flick
and laugh about it on the way home.

I hope to once again think that I am safer on the courts
than Wolfie is out on the open ocean,
and that the biggest worry for the club leadership
is stopping the peeing behind the shed
or getting enough volunteers to rake the leaves
or having enough courts for the Wine Country Open
or getting just the right topping mix
or having enough circles.

I hope I can once again go walk between the trees and see
that I am number seven
because that means that what once was
can be again.

Love to you all.
Take care of each other.
Its all we have.
