Days of Petanque: Questions vs Answers

Subject: Days of Petanque: Questions vs Answers

We are conditioned to think that for every question, someone has the answer. That whenever there is a need, a hero will appear. That the life we led, was the life we were meant to lead, that we were entitled to, at any cost, to the environment, to the rest of the world, to our children's futures. Maybe it is just not true. It may be the one you thought was the white knight, turns out to be the pale rider.

And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. —Revelation 6-8

Alternatively, that slamming door that closes off our past life may be just the noise we need to wake us from our sleepwalking.

Maybe the fear we feel will feed the adrenaline to carry us through the danger. Maybe the anger will fuel what we need to focus well enough to do what needs to be done, will open our eyes to consider how our profligate past has led us to this isolating now. To let us see that we may be less than the absolute masters of this world. That we swim in the river and are at the same time borne by it, to sink or float for only for as long as we may nurture and feed what strengthens us, as individuals and perhaps more importantly as a people.

Maybe the pale rider will turn out to be the white knight after all, here to cull the herd, prune the deadwood, cut the extra weight in order to reveal the lean, mean machine that was dormant inside us. Maybe what we need to survive is to save each other. Maybe John Lennon was right. But then we've always been in the business of killing our prophets, a time honored tradition. Quick turnover in that job.
