It seems like only yesterday
that we laughed freely
embraced
welcomed each other with open arms
and hearts
How is it now that we stand apart
and dare not sneeze
The pollen from trees
and grass
and flowers
mark us as the other
suspect
feared
How I long for those days
of easy competition
the intoxication of afternoon warmth
the clacking sound of boule on boule
the shouts of success
the derision of a miss
When the worst day's play
was still in the company of friends
I fell asleep each night
remembering and anticipating
that first blush of hope
as I stepped into the circle
eye on the target
and released the boule as if
those days would never end
